My Scooter Starts but Wont Accelerate – Find Out What to Do

Despite their small size, scooters can be quite complex machineries. And there is a good chance that if one small part is broken, the whole scooter won’t work properly.

My scooter starts but won’t accelerate, what can I do? There are a lot of reasons why your scooter won’t accelerate, here are the most common parts that might be causing this problem:

  • Airbox
  • Air intake
  • Spark plug
  • Fuel Filter

As you can see there are not that many things that can cause this specific problem, so let’s take a look at each one of them and find out which of them is causing you problems, and how to fix it.

Airbox

One common cause for this problem is the airbox. As time goes by the filter gathers a lot of dus, and at some point the filter will get full of dust, and it won’t be able to do its job properly. At that point the aibox will start to accumulate a lot of dust, and it might stop your scooter from getting any air.

Even if the airbox is not completely filled, the problem might still cour. So don’t dismiss this as the cause even if it’s not completely filled with dust.

To see if this is the problem you should clean the dust from the airbox. If the scooter starts working properly then you’ve found the problem.

If this was your problem, then you should definitely get a new filter. Even if you cleaned this one the filter won’t work at it’s full capacity.

If this wasn’t your problem, don’t worry we still have a few more items on the list to check.

Air Intake

Since we just checked the airbox, we should also look at the air intake.

As the name suggests, the air intake is the thing from where the scooter gets its air.

Any crack in the air intake will completely disrupt the air flow that helps the fuel inside the engine burn. So if you see any crack in the air intake, you should replace it, and this should solve your problem.

Spark Plug

The spark plug is the part that sparks the whole fuel burning process. This is the process that gives your scooter it’s power.

To check if the spark plug is the problem, simply take the spark plug out and see how it looks. Here is an image that will help you make the difference between a good spark plug, and a bad one.

If the spark plug is bad then you should simply change it. This should fix your problem.

Now let’s move to the next item on the list.

Fuel Filter

The role of the fuel filter is to stop any kind of debris from getting inside the engine. The way the filter does this is by stopping in place the debris. So it’s normal that at some point the filter would have stopped so many things that it would end up creating a blockage.

Testing if this is the problem is quite simple, just check if there are too many things stuck on the filter, and clean it.

If this was helped, and your scooter works normally again, then you should probably change the filter, to prevent something like this from happening again.

Conclusion

SO those are the most common problems that can stop your scooter from accelerating. As you can see they are not that difficult to solve. So if you follow my instructions you should be able to avoid a visit at the mechanic and save some money.
